Boot floppy hangs in VB

Post by crow_se »

I am trying to install Windows ME into an XP Pro host. I have created a virtual drive as follows :

Code: Select all

General
Name WinME
OS Type Windows Me
Base Memory 128 MB
Video Memory 32 MB
Boot Order Floppy, CD/DVD-ROM, Hard Disk
ACPI Enabled
IO APIC Enabled
VT-x/AMD-V Disabled
PAE/NX Disabled
Hard Disks
IDE Primary Master WinME.vdi [Normal, 6.00 GB]
CD/DVD-ROM
Host Drive E:
Floppy
Host Drive A:
Audio
Host Driver Windows DirectSound
Controller ICH AC97
Network
Adapter 0 PCnet-FAST III (NAT)
Serial Ports Disabled
USB
Device Filters 0 (0 active)
Shared Folders None
Remote Display Disabled
I start Vbox, select the virtual drive, then Start. Vbox starts the boot from a Win ME startup boot disk, and I get the following :

Code: Select all

Microsoft Windows Millenium Startup Menu

1. Help
2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.
3. Start computer without CD-ROM support.
4. Minimal boot

Enter a choice: 2

This driver is provided by Oak Technology, Inc..
OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM device driver, Rev D91XV352
(C)Copyright Oak Technology Inc. 1987-1997
  Device Name : MSCD001
  Transfer Mode : Programmed I/O
  Number of drives : 1

AIC-6260/6360/6370 ASPI Manager for DOS
Version 3.68S
Copyright 1990-1997 Adaptec, Inc.
The boot then hangs. I have let it run for about 20 minutes and it still does not get any farther. Can anyone help ? I have the log file if required, but it is a bit long to post on spec, and it would appear that it is not possible to attach a file.

System:
  • AMD Athon XP 2800+
    2 Gb DRAM
Nvidia 7600 GS with 512 Mb RAM
    Maxtor 6Y080P0 master hdd, 80Gb, 53Gb free
    Maxtor 7L250R0 slave hdd, 250Gb, 158Gb free
Double boot using Grub, XP Pro SP2 on master, PCLinuxOS on first 50Gb of slave.
TIA

Boot floppy hangs in VB

I have looked at the boot log and the problem appears to be :

Code: Select all

00:41:40.395 Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from Floppy...
00:41:58.361 PIIX3 ATA: LUN#2: performing device RESET
00:42:03.503 Guest Log: BIOS: PCI device 104B:1040 not found at index 0
00:42:07.077 Guest Log: BIOS: PCI device 104B:8130 not found at index 0
00:43:09.508 Guest Log: BIOS: KBD: int09h_handler(): scancode & asciicode are zero?
00:43:13.033 Guest Log: BIOS: KBD: int09h_handler(): scancode & asciicode are zero?
00:43:18.316 Changing the VM state from 'RUNNING' to 'SUSPENDED'.
00:43:21.727 Console::powerDown(): a request to power off the VM has been issued (mMachineState=5, InUninit=0)
This is where I powered the vm off. The boot disk works fine if I boot the pc from it.

Boot floppy hangs in VB

Further investigation shows
PCI Id Module Vendor Name Device Name
104b:1040 BusLogic BusLogic BT-946C (BA80C30) [MultiMaster 10]
104b:8130 BusLogic BusLogic Flashpoint LT

Does any of this ring any bells ?

I had a similar problem to install Win98. Every time I tried to boot with the
floppy with cdrom support, the system hung. I could boot without cdrom
support, but then I couldn't install the OS. I solved it using ImgBurn, I hope
it works for you:
1. I created a bootable ISO image with the settings:
file system iso9660; include hidden, system, archive files; set option make
it bootable (duh); emulation type 1.44 floppy;
ImgBurn allows you to extract boot image from the floppy
2. I selected to boot virtualbox from this image; and then the option
"with cd-rom support" just worked, I don't know why, and I could access
drive E:
3. I changed the cd-rom in VirtualBox from the boot image to the
host CD/DVD, and installed the OS.
Good luck.
