Guest crashing when USB 1199:9011 attached

Post by stratoss »

Host is Debian 9 stretch, VirtualBox 5.1.10_Debian r112026, Guest is WIndows 8. Both are x64.

First crash appeared while installing the drivers provided from Fujitsu (the host is Fujitsu Celsius H720). Second try to install the driver succeeded, but without the device attached. As soon as I attach the 3G modem, within half minute the VirtualBox crashes.

I'm afraid we only support VirtualBox here, not tribute bands. If you want to use the Debian fork of VirtualBox then that's fine, but then you need to look for support on the Debian forums. Otherwise, install the genuine article from this site and report back here if you still have a problem.

Okay, I've just installed 5.1.10 r112026 from your website, the guest is the same, the configs are the same. I'm attaching the new crash log.

It's not a crash log, and it contains zero information about the actual crash. So... nothing will happen.

This might get us somewhere: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump

You're welcome, if there is anything else I can do to help you out finding the reason for the issue, let me know. I can confirm than this virtual machine is usable otherwise, it crashes within half minute only when I attach the device in question.

Actually, can you describe exactly what happens? The device is some kind of 3G modem, right? From what I gather, the crash isn't instant and it always(?) happens, but it isn't entirely deterministic? I assume the device is not just sitting there but is actively sending/receiving data?

The problem is most likely some kind of race in the code, and the behavior is likely triggered by your USB device but might also depend on the exact host system configuration (that is to say, on other systems it might happen less frequently or not at all).

Two more things. One, please post the output of 'VBoxManage list usbhost' for the problem device. Two, since your guest is Windows 8, please try using the xHCI/USB3 device emulation and see if it changes anything. It might or might not, but it would be useful information either way.

Enabling USB3 fixed the crashes, but the device refuses to register itself to the network, which I believe is out of the VirtualBox's scope.

For the record, VBoxManage list usbhost returns

UUID: 038fd933-da58-446d-91cb-8213a6e3d216
VendorId: 0x1199 (1199)
ProductId: 0x9011 (0-11)
Revision: 0.2 (0002)
Port: 4
USB version/speed: 2/High
Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless Inc
Product: MC8305
Address: sysfs:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.5//device:/dev/vboxusb/001/005
Current State: Busy

I still can't understand how enabling USB3 for a USB2 device fixes the issue, but this is the result. Also, yes, it is the integrated 3G modem in Fujitsu Celsius H720.

P.S. the state changes itself to Captured when the guest is running.

OK, no matter what I do, as soon as I enable the modem in VirtualBox, it shows under the Networks as "Mobile broadband (off)" and it is practically unusable. Do you have any suggestions how to enable it? Under Network Connections in Windows 8 it is enabled, but not connected.

Thank you

edit: I have tried to run the Microsoft's Troubleshooter, and it is asking to "use the switch on the front or side of the computer" to turn on mobile broadband capability, the problem is, it is already in the enabled position, and changing it does nothing...

I'm getting closer, now

Code: Select all

netsh mbn sh rad int=*
is claiming that the hardware radio state is off, and flipping the hardware switch for the wireless network do not change anything. How can I pass the hardware radio state to the guest OS?

Because it does more than enabling USB3 support; it also completely changes the USB host controller emulation as well as the USB controller drivers inside the guest OS.

As for the 3G modem itself, that is probably not anyone on this forum can help out with much. Can you verify that the 3G modem works using any host OS and/or guest OS?
