Have you added your user name to the vboxusers group on the host and rebooted?

Provide the following results from the hosts terminal:

Code: Select all

id

VBoxManage list usbfilters

The 'vboxusers' group doesn't appear in the list of 'id', so it doesn't seem you have rebooted or at least logged out to activate the group assignment.

Did you reboot the host? Permissions do not take effect until you log off or reboot.

I just thought I would add my twopennyworth. Upgrading VB to 5.1.18 under Ubuntu 17.04 makes all USB devices inaccessible. This regardless of correct user/group assignments, login in and out, extensions and guest edition versions, enabling USB etc. etc as suggested on forums. Running VB as root fixes the problem, but of course isn't a solution. So VB has a permissions issue. I understand that downgrading VB to 5.0.14 is supposed to fix this, and that is what I shall now do.

If anyone can provide a more focused solution that would be great.

Yes you are correct that this seems to be a permission issue but typically the host is in control of the permissions. I would need to see a guest log file that shows this error along with the result of "id" from the host terminal. One other thing would be the results of "VBoxManage list extpacks" from the host.
