Hi guys,

I have an encrypted image of Ubuntu Server 16.10. Since the upgrade from Virtualbox 5.1.8 to 5.1.10, the image will not boot up as it pause immediately at the boot. I checked the log files and I see "The DEK for this disk is missing" error message. The Data Encryption Key is stored in the .vbox folder and if I go in there and open the file with an editor is there!

Code: Select all

<HardDisk uuid="{1c43ee8e-1919-464f-bb2e-b0d1a816cc1f}" location="Ubuntu Server.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal">
          <Property name="CRYPT/KeyId" value="Ubuntu Server"/>
          <Property name="CRYPT/KeyStore" value="U0NORQABQUVTLVhUUzI1Ni1QTEFJTjY0AAAAAAAAAAetc....."
        </HardDisk>
Why he cannot see it anymore? Do I need to change the path somewhere else ?

Thank you for your help!

EDIT : Ok, somehow the extension pack was removed so I reinstalled it and now it boots up asking the password for the decryption. So the DEK will work with the extension pack installed. I hope this will help someone :)

The ExtPack is actually required to have encryption of the VM, but thank you for sharing and actually marking this as [Solved], it's definitely going to help with future searches.
