Existing WIN10 prepared for VirtualBox

Post by HCP-DK »

Host: SUSE 12.2-SP2
Dual Boot: existing WIN10 with diverse Software
Extra SSHD space of 190GB for VM Box System available

I got VirtualBox installed.
I read it should be possible to generate an Image of a complete running system? I produced a ~.vhd image. But VB don't install it.
it stops at "install.sh".

a) is it possible to generate a installable image of a running WIN10 System?
b) what format do I need to generate?

You can't "install" a disk image - it isn't an appliance or an installer. You create a VM and use your disk image as the system disk. Tip: try to ensure that the disk image ends up inside the VM folder (i.e. move it there when you get to the disk creation step but before answering the prompt).

There are caveats:

1. Success will depends on how the VHD was created. A whole disk image will be bootable if the BIOSes are compatible. A windows partition backup is not bootable (though I don't think Win10 even has this feature any more).

2. Win10 run in a VM sees completely different hardware than when it ran on physical. If you imaged your working Win10 host then the image will be deactivated in a VM, and unless your Windows license allows it, activating the VM will deactivate your host.
