No internet - Server 2008 R2 guest

Hi,
I've been trying for quite some time to get this to work and looked at quite a few threads but still having no luck. I'm trying to connect with a wireless dongle. My host is using the wireless fine. Wired connection isn't an option, but it isn't working on wired either, anyway.
I've tried using a combination of NAT/bridged on separate adapters, NAT only, Bridged only with wlan0, tried turning off both the adapters and just using the usb filter.
Now, I have gotten it to the point where it says i'm connected, and my guest can ping google's DNS servers by ipv4 and ping google by name, but it can't ping anything else. It can't ping any other ips. I need to actually check if it can ping the gateway but i'm currently reinstalling my guest.
I've also upgraded my host (ubuntu) to 16.04, and upgraded virtualbox to 5.1. But the functionality remains the same.
Any help much appreciated.
Edit, I can ping my gateway but the latency is far higher getting to the gateway than google's DNS server. Bizarre.
Latency to 8.8.8.8 is approx. 20ms
Latency to default gateway is approx. 2500ms
???????
