Windows 10 installation not working OS X

Post by batboy »

Hi, when I try to install windows 10 using version 5.1.9 r111846 (Qt5.6.2), it gives me a green screen and I can not install. What do I do. I use a MacbookPro Retina.

In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.

Specifically for the VM log file ("VBox.log.zip"), here's what you do:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or paused state. Clean start.
  2. Take the steps required to generate/observe the error. Record the error message. EXACTLY. Post a screenshot if you have to.
  3. Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself). Not saved, not paused. Complete shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
  4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
  5. Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
On top of that, I'd like to see the "recipe" of the VM, the ".vbox" file:
  1. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show in Finder/Explorer/Whatever".
  2. ZIP the selected ".vbox" file and attach it in your response.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

You didn't say that you were trying to install a Win 10 Preview edition. You should, as it's a rather important detail.

Also, you seem to be using a test build of VirtualBox.

Also, the log is incomplete. You need to close the window (end the session) before grabbing a session log.

I see however that the VM is booting from CD, so this is a problem with the guest OS installer.

Not related to the immediate problem, but I see you have created a vdi file in an external drive "Seagate Expansion Drive". If you can't afford space on your main drive then you should move the entire VM folder to external storage (or just create it there), not scatter files all over the shop.

Thanks for reply pack. Really I try to install a Preview edition, and I use the test build because with normal versions don't work.

Well, if you install a flakey beta inside a flakey beta, I'd expect... flakiness.

Just for the record, the VirtualBox test builds are not as flaky as the Windows ones. In fact from the relevant page (underlining mine):
Testbuilds wrote:Regularly installing test builds and using them in your day-to-day work is one of the best ways you can help us improve the VirtualBox user experience.

These builds are expected to be almost as stable as released versions, and we accept bug reports against them.
I don't think that MS urges the users to install Windows insider builds in day to day work machines. On the contrary...

Still, the fact remains that a test build is by definition a "bleeding edge" latest release, and despite the name is untested by most mortals.

I'll admit that VirtualBox test builds are not usually feature releases, they should be bugfixes, and therefore more stable than the last release. Unlike Windows Preview releases, as you say.
