VirtualBox on linux broken after Dirty Cow patch install

Post by Vanguard »

We found after the Linux critical patch based on CVE-2016-5195 (Dirty Cow) was installed onto a working VirtualBox Linux physical host, the VirtualBox software reports this message when executing virtualbox from the Linux command line. The module vboxdrv is no longer found on the Linux machine.

WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded.
Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.32-642.6.2.el6.x86_64) or it failed to load.
Please recompile the kernel module and install it by
sudo /sbin/rcvboxdrv setup
You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, what is the resolution?

Update 12/21/16 Resolved by installing Virtualbox 5.0.31 , found solution in Virtualbox defect 15411.

Well? Did you do what the message says? Did you try to reinstall VirtualBox?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
