Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Host: Debian x64, kernel 4.8
Guest: Windows 10 x64
Virtualbox version 5.1.8, latest guest additions and extension pack installed. Shared clipboard is enabled (bidirectional) - not working at all. Drag and drop is enabled - not working. Please give me some tip how to make it working, thanks.
BTW also Vbox tray not working. There is no any tray icon visible. I must say, Virtualbox starts to be more and more buggy, sadly.

I'm afraid you got it backwards. It's Windows 10 and their continuous, app breaking, never ending, update cycle. Until the developers get their hands on a new build and fix any problems, a new update is out with more problems.giaur500 wrote:Guest: Windows 10 x64
In your case VBoxTray is not running and you see the clipboard and DnD problems. From somewhere else I got this:
I would think its a DWORD and it creates extended logging (don't know in the guest or host). As I said I haven't tried it. Give it a shot and see the VBox.log. I'll try it as well...Please create the following DWORD value in the guest registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VBoxGuest\LoggingEnabled=255

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Well, you want to say it's Windows 10 problem? Not so sure, as far as I know, there are no such problems on Vmware. Also, regarding to Vbox documentation, Windows 10 guests are fully supported, which is not true as we can see. To be honest, you should mention Windows 10 is not fully supported in vbox documentation.
Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Windows 7 Enterprise 64 as guest. Latest guest additions installed, seamless mode not available, auto scale guest display not available. Shared clipboard not working, vbox tray not showing. Nothing works. Any tips?

And apparently I got this information from "The VirtualBox/IPRT logging facility" (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VBoxLogging), section "Guest Additions logging".socratis wrote:Please create the following DWORD value in the guest registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VBoxGuest\LoggingEnabled=255
If there are thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands of users using Windows 10 in VirtualBox successfully, I would say that a single or two cases are noise, not the signal. So, my bet would be with something out of the ordinary going on. We just need to track it down. And since there are not that many people having the same problem as you, you'll have to help.giaur500 wrote:Also, regarding to Vbox documentation, Windows 10 guests are fully supported, which is not true as we can see.
- Start the VM. Not from a saved or paused state. Clean start.
- Take the steps required to generate/observe the error. I guess, just log in?
- Shut down the VM. Not saved, not paused. Complete shut down.
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
- Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show in Finder/Explorer/Whatever".
- ZIP the selected ".vbox" file and attach it in your response.

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Attachment added. Logs/vm from Windows 10, but exactly the same issues are on Windows7 as guest:
- shared clipboard not working
- seamless mode grayed
- auto scale guest display grayed
- drag and drop not working
- Vbox tray icon on guest not showing
In the meantime, I tested latest Vmware Player. All of above working like a charm on the same host, including drag and drop and clipboard. Now I'm considering to switch to Vmware if there is no soultion for Virtualbox.

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
All of the symptoms that you describe line-by-line, are one and the same; VBoxService.exe is not running on your system. I'll try to find out why, but I'm not in your computer. Check the guest error logs in the EventVwr (event viewer).
On every other message you post, you keep repeating that, as a solution, you're going to switch virtualizers. It sounds like you think you are making a threat. You are not. You are free to do as you please.

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Well, I added registry kery as you described, then rebooted guest. Looking in Windows Event Log, I can't find any virtualbox related entries. Where can I find logs?
Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Hi,
I have Windows 10 as host and 7 as guest.
Since the last VBox update ( 5.1.8 ) the Shared Clipboard: bidirectional setting doesn't work anymore.
I couldn't reproduce the problem.
I could only work around it shutting down the guest, then selecting first Shared Clipboard: disabled, then selecting again Shared Clipboard: bidirctional, and eventually starting the guest again.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Do you have to go to the settings? Or a simple reboot will do? Is VBoxService.exe running when the clipboard stops working? Is there a VBox tray icon?

Re: Windows 10 guest, shared clipboard not working
Good questions. I'll test it next time and update you.socratis wrote:Do you have to go to the settings? Or a simple reboot will do? Is VBoxService.exe running when the clipboard stops working? Is there a VBox tray icon?
EDIT:
A simple reboot was sufficient.socratis wrote:Do you have to go to the settings? Or a simple reboot will do?
There was no such a program when the clipboard didn't work, on the guest and on the host.socratis wrote:Is VBoxService.exe running when the clipboard stops working?
As it is not such a program now when the bidirectional clipboard works again.
Where am I supposed to find it? on the guest or on the host? Is it a service or a normal user process?
Yes, there was such an icon (also the VBoxTray.exe) on the guest.socratis wrote:Is there a VBox tray icon?
