Key releases sent to guest when key held

I have an app that processes key presses and releases. If I hold a key down in Windows 8.1 guest, it flies though events as though I'm pressing and releasing a key when I'm only pressing it and not releasing it. Is there a workaround for this? Guest is Debian amd64. Thanks.
