Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to this stuff. So today I installed Kali Linux onto my Oracle. Now when I type:

> ifconfig

eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.2.31 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255
inet6 fe80::a00:27ff:fe27:6d4 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x20<link>
ether 08:00:27:27:06:d4 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 303 bytes 28158 (27.4 KiB)
RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 123 bytes 10851 (10.5 KiB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

lo: flags=73<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> mtu 65536
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10<host>
loop txqueuelen 1 (Local Loopback)
RX packets 24 bytes 1396 (1.3 KiB)
RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 24 bytes 1396 (1.3 KiB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
and then when i do

iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

this is what I get.

Can someone help me understand why I don't get my wlan0 info?

Because the virtual network that VirtualBox provides is just that; virtual. And it's always wired. It doesn't see your actual hardware, except the CPU (and even that with asterisks). The only way to have wireless network in a VM, is to use a USB wireless adapter. Search the forums, all right?

Are you mixing two command as below -

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig
and

Code: Select all

sudo ifdown wlan0
followed by

Code: Select all

sudo ifup wlan0
to re-activate the wireless adapter.

@Elizine
There is no wireless adapter in VirtualBox, no matter what the commands.
