gnome archlinux screen freeze

Post by Nerev4rine »

i have some problems with my Arch Linux after I updated some latest patches of arch,
the screen freezes, but when i return to windows the next screen will be visible, so its possible to do something on it but only when repeatly returning to windows.
on VMware i dont have this problem, so the problem lies within virtualbox, i really tried every possible configuration and it doesnt change anything... :(
maybe someone experiences the same? i have tried a clean install of my arch, i tried on a different computer, the problem stays the same.. :(

I deleted your duplicate message from the "Windows Hosts" section. According to the forum rules, duplicate posts are not allowed.

In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance. For the VBox.log.ZIP part of the information:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
  2. Take the steps required to generate/observe the error. Record the error message. EXACTLY. Post a screenshot if you have to.
  3. Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself). Not suspended, not paused. Complete shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
  4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
  5. Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

VirtualBox VM 5.1.4 r110228 win.amd64 (Aug 16 2016 19:17:01) release log
00:00:17.377063 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 5.1.6 r110634 '5.1.6'
I can't say that I've seen this one before...[1] You have newer guests additions (GAs) installed compared to the basic VirtualBox install. Did Arch update your GAs, or did you downgrade VirtualBox? In any event, you should upgrade VirtualBox on your host to 5.1.6 as well. See if that fixes it...

Did you actually observe the problem that you're describing? Your VM was up and running for less than a minute. Are you seeing the problem as soon as you boot? Also, can you please clarify the description of the problem a little bit more?

Finally, you should remove any references to "D:\archlinux-2016.08.01-dual.iso" from your VM. I guess it was the CD/DVD that you used to install Arch, forgot to eject it, and deleted it manually from your computer. No serious harm done.

[1]: Typically you install a newer VirtualBox and then you update the (older) GAs. So, typically again, there might be a chance of running older GAs (until you update them), but I've never seen newer GAs on the guest.

it was running only a minute because else the logg would be too big,
the problem lies within the virtualbox-guest-utils package,
it all started after I updated, so im very sure about that,
i tried everything, even clean installs, i tried that 5 times.
the only time the problem WONT occur, is when i dont install the virtualbox-guest-utils package,
but then im limited to a very small screen.
i hope this info works :(

"virtualbox-guest-utils " is a distro specific package. While you can use these forks you need to seek their assistance since we have no idea how to support them. Alternatively you could remove their package and install the official ones and see if that fixes your issue.

Since you are using Windows it already comes with your original install. Remove the ones you have now and then use the "device tab -> insert guest additions" and proceed as usual to install. See the user manual for further details.
