I installed a virtual windows7 x64 on my Linux mint host Laptop
and set the guest to use 2GB RAM
Every thing is working well, but i noticed a difference when running the same guest on Vbox and Vmware

using the same installation ISO and same guest specs on the same host:

when i run the guest in Vbox the host used RAM will be about 40% - 50%
but, when i run the guest in Vmware the host used RAM will be about 10% - 20%

i think that Vmare use ram dynamically (as needed), but Vbox always use all the allocated RAM

is my guess right ?, how can i make Vbox behave like Vmware in the ram usage ?

Host specs:

Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit
Kernel 4.4.0-38-generic
Intel code i7-3610QM @ 2.3GHZ x 4
memory 7.7 GB
Vbox Version 5.1.6 r110634 (Qt5.5.1)
VMware® Workstation 12 Player 12.5.0 build-4352439

You're a little bit shy on the details, mainly on the guest side:

1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
2. Take the steps required to generate/observe the error. Please post absolute numbers (not percentages) and evidence.
3. Shut down the VM. Not suspended, not paused. Complete shut down.
4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
5. Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).

I have no clue how VMWare works, mainly because I've never used it. I do know how VirtualBox works. Please read the following threads:

• Virtual box and memory management, and most importantly
• What happens if I exceed my RAM? (especially Ramshankar's answer).

Sorry about this misunderstanding
the problem was in the memory widget i was using
it was not viewing the right mem usage , so instead i tested it on task manager
and it appeared to me exactly the same RAM usage on both programs
