[SOLVED] Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
[SOLVED] Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
In attempting to run a new VM for Xubuntu 16.04, I get the error below. My VirtualBox version is 5.0.2 r102096, and I'm running it under LinuxMint 17.3.
"The device helper structure version has changed."
If you have upgraded VirtualBox recently, please make sure you have terminated all VMs and upgraded any extension packs. If this error persists, try re-installing VirtualBox. (VERR_PDM_DEVHLPR3_VERSION_MISMATCH).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
I reinstalled the extension packs for this version. To make sure all VMs and extensions were properly shut down, I did a system restart. The error still comes up. I wonder if it's a problem with the Xubuntu image, as I have two other VMs that start & run without a problem.

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
That's not how you shutdown a VM. Open VirtualBox Manager, select the VM and select "Discard State".TomCr wrote:To make sure all VMs and extensions were properly shut down, I did a system restart.

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
I know. I just restarted in case there was something hanging up. The restart made sure I was starting fresh.

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
And? There are no "if", "and", or "but" here. The VM is either in a saved state or it isn't. Please post the ZIPPED VBox.log.
With the VM shut down, right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager, "Show Log...", save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).

The VM log should be attached.

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
I guess you know what's next... Install the appropriate ExtPack so that the versions match. I would suggest to actually update VirtualBox as well, since you're at it, unless you have reasons not to.VirtualBox VM 5.0.2 r102096 linux.amd64 (Aug 13 2015 16:42:27) release log ... 00:00:00.851560 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.26 r108824; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)

Oops. Confucius say, "Always scroll to bottom of webpage to make sure you're downloading correct pkg."
Thanks. I'll try this and report back.

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
Okay, there was only one download option for the 5.0.2(0) version. After installing it, there is still apparently enough of a discrepancy (zip attached again) that the error continues to come up.
Why is this only happening with the new Xubuntu VM and not the existing Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and win7 VM's?

Re: Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
I guess I'm confused by the build numbers, thinking as in decimal terms that 5.0.2 = 5.0.20, which is apparently not the case. (perhaps if the versioning used something like 5.0.02, I would've realized the difference; I've probably been misinterpreting Linux version #'s for years then)http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... ox-extpack
Thank you. I'm at work now, but I'll try that other download tonight or tomorrow morning. (Or maybe it'd be better for me to just refresh Synaptic and upgrade to the latest version of both.)
Re: [SOLVED] Starting error with new Xubuntu VM
Update: I was able to install the correct version of the extension pack and this allowed Xubuntu to boot.
Xubuntu is not playing well in the virtual machine, but that's a subject for another topic.
Current problem solved. Thanks for the replies.
