Hello all,
Im having real problems getting 5.1.6 to work on my ubuntu system
Ive installed 'virtualbox 5.1.6 for Linux hosts' to be specific 'Ubuntu 16.04 ("Xenial") 64 bit'
Ive checked i'm definitely 64 bit no worries there AND Vitualization is on on my laptop
ive now installed what i belive is the correct extention pack. 'VirtualBox 5.1.6 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack'
which went through and installed no problems.
my user name is on the vbox users list too.
ive downloaded the correct iso for Kali (also 64 bit) and set it in the attribues of my VM in Vbox.
im still getting an error when trying to open my Kali virtual machine though. Spesifically
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Kali.
The virtual machine 'Kali' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Interface:
IMachine {b2547866-a0a1-4391-8b86-6952d82efaa0}
after which another message pops up almost imediately
VirtualBox - error in suplibOslnit
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing
'/sbin/vboxconfig'
as root.
where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.
ive run '/sbin/vboxconfig' and get...
root@chomp:~# '/sbin/vboxconfig'
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.
There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run
/sbin/vboxconfig
as root.
as you can see im getting nowhere. any help would be greatly appreciated

No, you're getting somewhere. You simply missed one thing:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Also, can you verify that you installed VirtualBox from the official site and didn't install it using a package manager/software center?Jd0t wrote:vboxdrv.sh: failed: modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.

Take a look at Chapter 2.3. Installing on Linux hosts and especially at the troubleshooting in 2.3.3. Performing the installation and the "/var/log/vbox-install.log".
