Hi
I have multiple virtual machines and only one of them is not working as expected. I have Windows 10 as guest machine. I tried to install virtualbox guest additions but vboxtray is not showing in system tray. The additions installed without problem but I am unable to turn on "auto resize guest display" it is grayed out.

Virtualbox 5.1.6
System Acceleration: Vt-x/AMD-V, Nested Paging, PAE/NX, Hyper-V Paravirtualization
Display Acceleration: 2D, 3D

Guest Machine: Windows 10 professional

I have windows 10 home 64bit.

Do you need logs ? If yes, which one ?

  1. Why do you care? It's not like VBoxTray is doing anything useful ;). No, joking aside, that may mean an incorrect installation or something not working as it should, so you're doing the right thing researching it.
  2. Naive question, but have you tried uninstalling the GAs and installing them anew?
  3. Anything "out of the ordinary" that you've done to your guest?
  4. About the logs, sure. You can check for yourself if you want, but let's check them in parallel so you'll know for the next time. The procedure below is to get the VBox.log, to tell us if the GAs are running or not. If that doesn't work, maybe we need to check the Windows installer logs:
    1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start. Log in.
    2. Shut down the VM. Not suspended, not paused. Complete shut down.
    3. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
    4. Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
EDIT: Do you have enabled the setting in the Taskbar, where ALL icons are shown?

Yes, I really don't care if this shows up or not, just made me curious why it is not visible.

Yes, reinstalling or uninstalling and installing doesn't solve the problem. Even on fresh Windows installation.
Anything "out of the ordinary" that you've done to your guest?
Nope, nothing unusual. Everything is set as always has been.

Log attached.

I'm sure it is not working, because in task manager the process is not shown.

Can't say that I see anything wrong in your logs. The GAs are showing as up and running. I don't know what to make of it, except that you're the 2nd user, just today complaining about the same thing, albeit the other user is using a Win7 VM. What's up today? Is the the GAs-Not-Working day?

One last thing to try is to right-click on the GA installer and "Run as Administrator".

PS. I'm moving this to the "Windows Guests" from the "Windows Hosts" sub-forum.

Have a same problem after updating VirtualBox to 5.1.6 & updating guest additions.
Host - openSUSE Tumbleweed, kernel 4.7.5
Guest - Windows 10
Guest window auto resize is grayed out in menu; VIrtualBox tray icon is not showing up.

When you follow the instructions above and post a VBox.log, then we can talk about it. Not before I'm afraid...

One thing I forgot to ask from everyone in this thread is your Windows version (exact build) and when was it last updated. Are you in the fast ring? Maybe Microsoft changed something, because there are more than one reports about this. So, please post some guest details.

I am afraid I don't know how to check it…
What I can say for sure is that VM was not booted for last 4 months (before updating VirtualBox, I mean)

My Windows 10 is updated to the latest version, no further updates are available at the moment. The problem still occurs. Maybe it is related to one of the Windows updates ? It would be extremely hard to find out which one...

The simplest way to see what Windows OS version you are running is to enter winver at a command prompt.

According to winver, I have Windows 10 Pro version 1511, build 10586.164

What issue? There has been a range of issues discussed in this thread.

What about the guest additions doesn't work for you? What is the host OS?

Gust additions work fine for me with 14393.321 as a guest and the same build as host OS.

Thanks BillG.

My issue was that after installing WIndows 10, I couldn't see the full Windows desktop without being in "scaled mode." (I could only see the upper half and could not scroll down.) For some reason, that issue has gone away but the issue that remains is that Guest Additions isn't converting the small ratio (4:3?) to the widescreen I have. (I'm on a MacBook Air using OS Sierra 10.12.)

I have reinstalled Guest Additions several time and done restarts, but that hasn't work.

I have also gone into Preference >> Display and changed "Maximum Guest Screen Size" to "hint" and entered 1900 x 1200, and restarted, but that had no effect.

Thanks for any suggestions you have.
