CentOS7 unclickable auth dialog box with 3D acceleration

This post is fairly informational as I think I have it all figured out.

I'm running CentOS7 with Gnome3 Desktop on VirtualBox 5.1.6 on a Chapeau (Fedora) 23 Linux host. When starting the TigerVNC service an authentication dialog box would pop up asking for my password to create a new color managed device (colord). A bit irritating (and has a Redhat bug report associated) but workable. However, I'm unable to click on the dialog because the mouse pointer and keyboard inputs are underneath the window. The authentication dialog is actually floating over the rest of the interface but still inside the VM window. Full screen mode does nothing to change this. I can make the dialog go away by resizing the screen or going to full screen mode but in fact it just puts the dialog box BEHIND all the other windows. I can see it flicker back there on resize.

After spending two days testing I've come to believe it's the 3D acceleration. I've reinstalled and or reverted the VM on two different hosts many times. I initially thought it was guest additions but I can now have guest additions installed or not and I still get the same result if 3D acceleration is turned on.

Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone know the cause?

I've only seen this behavior using Linux hosts as the same VMs on Windows 10 had to have 3D acceleration turned of because the screen flickered otherwise. Perhaps the 3D acceleration is just very buggy?
