Split partitioned VDI into separate VDIs

I have an Ubuntu VM that is laid out like this on a single dynamic VDI:

Code: Select all

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_vm-lv_root
                       50G 3.0G 44G 7% /
tmpfs 1.5G 0 1.5G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 485M 99M 361M 22% /boot
/dev/mapper/vg_vm-lv_home
                       74G 17G 53G 25% /home
I would like to take /home and move it to a separate fixed VDI file to see if it provides any performance improvement. Any suggestions on how to do this or if it is doable?

Anything is doable. The only thing to remember is the VDI is the same as a hard drive to a PC. You would add another disk ( VDI ) to the guest and proceed to do your move. Since you are using LVM it may be a little harder but the Ubuntu folks can tell you how to achieve this. It would also be a good idea to back up the entire guest before you start this in case something goes wrong.

Thanks Perryg, that didn't even occur to me.
