Windows 8.1 "no audio devices are installed" for recording

Hi,

I like to use my headset (physical onboard sound, no USB) in the VM for presentation, but the Windows 8.1 x64 guest is always saying "no audio devices are installed" on the recording tab of audio preferences. Playback is working fine.

On my Linux host, I tried with PulseAudio and ALSO. Both host options working fine for output, but no change on the Windows guest. Still no recording (which is fine on Linux host).

I tried to switch the simulated audio controller to Soundblaster 16, but Windows does not even start like this. For ICH AC97, Windows is missing drivers. I tried to find some, but with no success. Every driver I found seems the wrong one as Windows saying it does not fit to hardware or it does not run (ec 28).

How do I get recording running on my Virtualbox Windows 8.1 guest?

No solution? I just found that this is the same for Windows 7 guests. There is no recording device available on all my VirtualBox VM's. I'm now using a USB headset, as this is recognized in the VM. But having two headsets because of this sucks...

How do I get a recording device in my Windows VM's?

Try the following -
1. Right click speaker icon (right hand corner)
2. Select Playback devices
3. Right click Speakers
4. Enable it and set as Default

Hi,

they are enabled and set as default. Thus, I can not set as default again.

Not even the device manager is showing a recording device, only playback.

Which VBox version is this you're using?
