[NotAnIssue] Can't ping network from guest

Post by Hi-Angel »

I couldn't find a similar discussions.

Host and guest have static IPs. Guest network configuration is a "bridged network".

Host can ping both guest and PCs on the network. But guest can only ping host, pings to PCs on network doesn't work.

Netmask on guest is over permissive, 255.0.0.0. I also tried to set guest's IP on the host, and host pings still works (i.e. they not blocked from the IP). I've no idea what's the problem.

UPD: with

Code: Select all

tcpdump
I noticed the difference: for I am pinging PCs on the network, I never get ARP Reply. But for I am ping the host, I do get it. So, seems, it's not the VB problem, hm…

UPD2: I'm closing the question as [NotAnIssue] because the problem is irrelevant to VB, and is that ARP replies (as I saw with tcpdump) are filtered out by MAC address (I'm in an office environment). FWIW, it's not only ARP is filtered: upon adding a static ARP entry, ping times out either.

  1. You don't mention your host.
  2. You don't mention the VirtualBox version.
  3. You don't mention your guest.
  4. You don't mention your guest's network configuration.
  5. You don't mention your overall network configuration.
Do you really expect any answers with the information given?

Mhm, yes, I do expect, I mentioned network configuration, both VB-specific, and in host and guest. I didn't only mentioned IPs. VirtualBox version is 5.0.26, sorry, I should've mentioned that. Guest OS isn't relevant at all, it's a plain network deal.

Anyway, I am sorry for the noise, as I mentioned in the update, it seems something wrong with the network, i.e. PCs just doesn't answers to ARP requests. Seems to be irrelevant to VB. Can I remove the question?

No need to remove the question. Questions stay here so (hopefully, but it never happens) other users searching for solutions might stumble upon it. You could edit your first post and change the title to "[NotAnIssue] Can't ping network from guest", or "[Solved] Can't ping network from guest".

You also didn't mention if you are using WLAN or (cabled) LAN.
Bridged networking on WLAN can have similar effects.
