trouble with Virtual Box extensions

I've installed Virtual box both on a machine running windows 8.1 and a machine running ubuntu 16.04 and in both cases virtual box fails to install extensions correctly. I have tried from both the command line and from the GUI but with no success. Can anybody help. Cheers

Do you mean you try to install the Extension Pack in VirtualBox? If yes, simply saying "with no success" doesn't help too much. There must surely be an error of sorts, right? And you didn't quite describe in details the steps you took, for example the command line that you used. Don't be afraid to go into details, they don't bite
