[Solved] Fedora 24 with Win 7 guest - crashes Gnome "too many open files"?

Post by ttstooge »

Description says most of it.
After an hour or so of use the VM crashes and takes Gnome with it (or maybe the other way around?)
Do I need to modify the open file limits or is this not a normal thing?
My searches haven't turned up much where VBox is concerned.
Also - should I look deeper for other errors?

Setup is Core i5 dual core & 16G RAM. VM is allocated 2cpu & 4G.

Any help appreciated greatly!

If it helps, excerpt from journalctl follows:

What version of VirtualBox are you using and where did it come from?

VirtualBox-5.1-5.1.6_110634_fedora24-1.x86_64

Installed via dnf from download<dot>virtualbox<dot>org<slash>virtualbox<slash>rpm<slash>fedora<slash>24<slash>x86_64

(Wow.. "You must be a member for 1 days and have 1 posts before you can post urls" -- is really annoying, eh?)

Yes but necessary. Before eliminating the posting of URLs for the first 24 hours we spent most of the day chasing and deleting spam from bots, now we don't.

The "too many open files" have come up from time to time but IIRC not from the host. We would need to see some more information like the guests log file and /var/log/vbox-install.log from the host.

For what it's worth, I raised open files = 60000 and set max user processes = 30000.
This has stabilized everything significantly.
I am having some other quirky issues that I'm still tracking down but that's for another thread...

Hi Ttstooge! I'm experiencing the same crashes in Gnome sessions (fedora 24 & wayland) and journalctl shows the message "Too many open files".
how did you change the limit of open files and processes? I am not allowed to raise the number beyond 4096 (with "ulimit -n 4096") and that is not enough (still have crashes)
Thanks and best regards

This explains it all: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1373451

I am still interested in ttstoge's solution, and how to implement it.
TIA
