How to Install Vbox (linux 6) rpm file on W7 PC?

Post by helmsman5 »

Newbie here intending to use Linux 6 on Vbox on a Windows 7 (64bit) pc. Downloaded
VirtualBox1-5.1.4_110228_el6-1.x86_64.rpm
Isn't rpm a linux package file?
How to install/configure/use a VM?
Any good links for a beginner on this?

Thanks in advance!

You selected the wrong file to install. Select the one for Windows since that is your OS on the PC. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Thank you. I'm still confused :)
Objective is running Linux on a Windows PC in some kind of VM.
Thought Vbox is tool for that.

Are you recommending installing a WINDOWS VBox?
How then to bring down and install Linux 6 within?

Thanks for your time and help.

VirtualBox is a program that allows you to install and run various types of OSes in a secure environment. You install the version of VirtualBox that matches your operating system then download and install the OS you want to run with VirtualBox.

Thanks Perry!

I understand now to install the windows Vbox, since that is my PC OS. Will do so now.

What Linux 6 file do I pull down to install, and do I do that inside and while running the vbox?

Thanks for your continuing help!

Normally Linux 6 means RedHat but it can be just about any RPM Linux distro there is in the version 6 category. RedHat is a particular OS and is not well supported unless you get a service contract. Perhaps if you explain exactly what it is you are needing and why I could advise you better.

Hi Perry!

Am leading a proof of concept at work on a commercial NOSQL product on a Red Hat Linux 6 OS.

Rusty on UNIX, just need a home environment (lab) on personal W7 PC to brush up on command line interface, where I can execute tutorial exercises over the next couple days.. Nothing too serious.

You can download and install an evaluation version of RedHat 6 from the following:
https://access.redhat.com/downloads

Or you can use Oracle 6 which is the same thing.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/serve ... 50441.html

Keep in mind that other than how to setup VirtualBox you need to ask the supporting OS forum how to use their software as it is outside the scope of this forum.
