Debian jessie, installation unmet dependencies

Post by Cheech »

Hay guys

Having an issue installing vb 5.1 on Debian, have added correct repos to sources list, keys to apt etc all that has gone fine but once I go to install I get met with the following error
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
virtualbox-5.1 : Depends: libdevmapper1.02.1 (>= 2:1.02.97) but 2:1.02.90-2.2+deb8u1 is to be installed
Depends: libqt5core5a (>= 5.5.0) but 5.3.2+dfsg-4+deb8u1 is to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 5.2) but 4.9.2-10 is to be installed
Depends: libvpx3 (>= 1.5.0) but it is not installable
Recommends: linux-image but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
root@Debian:/#
I have removed, purged and tried to reinstall but get the same results, tried to repair broken packages hasn’t worked.
From what I can see the vb installation for 5.1 wants to install dependencies of an older build. I am not sure where to go from here so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hard to say without knowing what the host really is and what the repo really is.
  • 1) post the exact/complete host OS name
    2) download the newest package from virtualbox.org and install with dpkg.
If you find depend issues at this point run apt-get -f install and see if it completes.
If not post the /var/log/vbox-install.log
