Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 4.6 - Unable to launch VMs

Post by DevonRiviera »

Hi,

Virtualbox version 5.1.4 installed from Oracle Repositories

I recently upgraded the Linux kernel from 4.2 to v4.6 on my Ubuntu 14.04 install, since then I have been unable to launch any VMs within VirtualBox, after running the VM I get the error messages in attached screenshot.

The error advisees: reinstalling the kernal modual by running /sbin/vboxconfig as root

When doing running vboxconfig it fails and advises checking the vbox-install.log, which is also attached.

Please can someone take a look and advise what my next step should be, or if this configuration can be fixed.

Many Thanks.

You need a newer version of gcc to match this kernel.

Ok, Thanks, I currently have gcc version 4.8.4 installed, what version should I move to? there seems to be a wide choice, should I go to the latest 4.x version or a 5.x or even 6.x? Will this affect other apps I have installed?

Thanks.

Hi,

I've update GCC to v 6.1.1 and re-run vboxconfig and I'm pleased to say everything is now working.

Many Thanks.
