1st. created Macrim VHD file on external HDD, created Vbox instance,(attempted both Non-Admin and Admin start) attempted to run vhd file,Win7 stopped with error, selected Repair, an hour or later Win7 got to the screen with Olive Branch and Dove, no user logon shown, Checked startup later - and Vbox/Win7 had stopped.
Attempted restart produced: "Failed to open image 'K:\6C33B3C0115AFADF-00-00.vhd' for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
AHCI: Failed to attach drive to Port0 (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).

Result Code:

2nd. Copied Macrim backup file to Pc HDD, created macrim VHD file. VBox does not start instance(VBox was started as Admin on guest user),

3rd. Attempted to create another VBox instance, error indicates a mismatch of group file attached to C:\ drive, the VHD file is on Partition 9 of 11.

My purpose is to Validate the Macrim backup with having to re install on a PC.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

How did you create the Macrium VHD file? What is it an image of? Your host machine?

Virtualbox will present different hardware to the Operating System stored in the VHD than the OS was controlling on the physical PC. You're essentially taking the drive out of one computer and putting it in a substantially different computer. Windows doesn't easily handle having the brain attached to a different body. It can be done, but it's not smooth. Expect some Frankenstein moments.

You can google for this: "P2V site:forums.virtualbox.org" to see what others have done. There's also a couple stickies in the Windows Guests subforum that may help.

Keep in mind that if you do get the guest OS running and you try to activate you may de-activate your physical PC's OS, and if the PC is a Dell or an HP or some other big-name company PC your PC's OS may be tied to the BIOS and won't start in another PC, physical or virtual.

And when all is said and done, since you're restoring the backup to dissimilar hardware, there's no guarantee the restore will work on the original PC. If you really want to test the backup, get another hard drive for the physical PC and restore to that.

Thank you for the Frankenstein review. Viewing F.Langa info about testing the validity of a backup using VBox, pursued this avenue.

Will use another HDD to test.

Thank you again.
