i tried an old boot disk from xp, but vbox could not read it even tho it accessed the cd.

Jo Ann, start at the beginning. Explain the context, what you are trying to do, and where you're getting stuck. You've started in the middle.

What is you host OS? version of VBox? Your guest: What OS are you trying to install? Are you migrating an existing native windows installation or are you trying to do a Windows install to a blank disk?

Jo Ann, I've just realised that you've posted this same Q in two different forums. Please don't. You just waste or time, and therefore make it less likely that we will give you useful help. I am locking this post.
