Hello,

I am new to the forum though I have been using VirtualBox for several years. It is the first time that I am really stuck with a problem plaguing my Windows 10 and 7 VMs.
I have acquired a new computer this month and inserted my SSD that was on my previous computer.
My host is Debian 8.5 and I used to run the version 4.3.36 of VirtualBox on my previous PC without any issues. My guest VM is Windows 10.
Since I have upgraded to my computer, I basically can’t run an application under my VM win10 more than 5mins without experiencing the following error/crash “This application has stopped working”. If I look at the windows event log, it just mentions “APPCRASH” and doesn’t provide any useful information. I verified that I had any memory leaks : nothing, the memory looks healthy.
I have then decided to upgrade my virtualbox version (as well as the guest additions), thinking it would bring a lot of improvements and fixes. I have installed the “Backports” version (5.0.26) but without any improvements (though it looks nicer!).
I have tried to enable/disable 2D/3D as the softwares I am running mainly use Google Maps Terrain view which require (I suppose?) the use of my graphic cards.
Then, I decided to give Win7 a try hoping that win10 being too “new”, it would be the cause of the issues.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing the same issue on Win7…

At this point, my only hunch is related to my graphic card/driver. I installed the D3D support when installing the Guest additions but probably it was a mistake ?

I can provide any necessary logs from VirtualBox and/or my system specs if needed.

That would be mine too, especially if the graphics card is not identical between your new and your old computer. Check to see and make sure that there are no updates to the host's graphics drivers.

BTW, Google apps have the tendency to enforce the use of 3D acceleration, with all sorts of side effects. Chrome is one of their programs known to not be so friendly in VMs. See if you can disable the 3D acceleration from within Google Maps Terrain view.

I am using the latest ati driver available for Debian Jessie distrib. I dont know if that makes a difference but I am not using the proprietary driver

I didn't know about this 3d acceleration feature for Google Maps. It's a good suggestion, however, I am not directly using Google Maps but an embedded version of it (SportTracks software for example and the software doesn't seem to have this capability
