I have win10 64 bit x86 host with a 32 bit i386 guest running Ubuntu desktop. I can't do anything with it because the virtual display looks like this. I'm using the built-in video on my ASUS P8B75-M/CSM LGA 1155 Intel B75 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

There are plenty of posts about Ubuntu-related garbled displays. It varies with Ubuntu versions, the older the version, the better the situation. You didn't unfortunately told us yours.

Another fix that has been used with success is to disable 3D acceleration for the VM.

Moved to "Linux Guests".

I am having the same exact problem and I have Windows 10 64 bit X86 host with a 32 bit i386 guest running Ubuntu 16.04 desktop. Everything worked fine (previously had 5.0.26) until I upgraded to VirutalBox 5.1.2.
Also, 3D acceleration is disabled on my system.

However I have discovered a work around

boot the VM OS with the physical DVD in the optical drive (or use ISO file)
choose "English"
choose "Try before you install"
let the system boot up to where the screwed up graphics desktop is visible.
<Ctrl><Alt><T>
sudo service lightdm stop
<host-key><F1>
login (lubuntu no password)
sudo service lightdm start





Problem the work around solved

Host 64b Lubuntu 16.04.1 system

Guest OS various Live CDs Lubuntu 14.04.5 Xubuntu 16.04.1 and of course because it is the actual one I want to use the Lubuntu 16.04.1 fails to run properly.

I see a very large mouse pointer and a trash can icon the screen is limited to the top left corner, no start button or task bar can be seen. Windows key plus <R> opens a run dialogue but that also is not in the view port.


I am told that if I switch screens <Ctrl><Alt><F1> then <Alt><F7> this fixes the graphics display.
I could work with that if only I knew how to get those keystrokes to the Guest Live CD in "Try Lubuntu before installing" mode.
If no one can tell me how to do that then I'll have to wait untill the LiveCD problem is fixed and a new Live CD is released

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.
