I have a TH-D72a kenwood radio. it connects via a usb cord so that I can run the software MCP-4a. This requires a virtual comport driver. The windows install can be found by googling "MCP-4a" it will be under kenwood's site.
My Ubuntu 16.04 machine registers the device as /dev/USB0.
under lsusb i get:
Bus 002 Device 018: ID 10c4:ea60 Cygnal Integrated Products, Inc. CP210x UART Bridge / myAVR mySmartUSB light
i am not sure what to do to forward this device to the VM.
It may be that I am not starting Virtualbox with sudo so it can access it but I would really rather not use sudo if I don't have to.

USB with a Linux host is the easiest way to use USB passthrough. All it requires is you install the Extension Pack ( that matches your version of VirtualBox ) and that you have your user in the vboxusers group followed with a reboot to set permission changes.

With that in mind not all USB devices will work in a virtual guest. Try a normal thumb drive first to test.

Missed the reboot, had the rest. So since I moved to Linux I have found that reboot usually isnt the answer so i don't even think that anymore.

Actually a log out and in would probably have done it, but a reboot is a sure thing.
