my configuration is network LAN with router
my ip setting is dhcp with persistent ip adress (with mac)
in the guest, network setting is on DHCP (it obtains an ip adress 10.0.2.2 like winXP on ubuntu with virtualbox)
in virtual box, i have chosen NAT setting because it's easier...but it don't work...

>why NIC type is so important?
Because Windows 98 doesn't have drivers for newer NICs, so use AMD PCnet II. (you can try to get drivers for newer cards from the net, but usually it is not worth the effort - because Win98 is desktop OS, not server OS).
Using NAT will make your life easier.

ok Technologov thx for precision...but I'm sure NIC is detected and work correctly...it's juste the connection don't work...
I already use NAT configuration...but it don't work...
stefan.becker my LAN work on 192.168.1.0/24 network
WINXP has address ip 192.168.1.68
the internet connection works fine...
on Win98 in virtualbox my IP setting is :
10.0.2.15
255.255.255.0
10.0.2.2 (gateway)
DNS is 10.0.2.3
I can ping 10.0.2.2 but i can't ping 192.168.1.68
i try to use all NIC in virtual box (with the good driver for card not detected like intel gigabit...)
and nothing work...
I don't know why...
I try to install a win XP system on virtualbox near of win98 and all work fine!!! (network...) without guest addition!!
I have juste a problem with win 98... (network too...)

- Primary OS: MS Windows 7
- VBox Version: PUEL
- Guest OSses: DOS, Win3x, Win95, WinXP, Ubuntu, OS/2
Some hints based on Win98SE:
VirtualBox settings: ACPI enabled, IO APIC disabled, NAT networking; and PIIX3
Internet setup using the Internet wizard: select LAN where possible, don’t select anything in the proxy screen.
Adapter checks:
1 - via device manager, and make sure that it doesn't have any yellow question mark.
2 - via Control Panel, Network..: TCPIP protocol should be present. Sometimes you loose it when changing adapters.
It should NOT be necessary to configure IP manually.
Checked with VirtualBox versions 1.4.0-1.5.6 (but all the above is determined by OS rather than by VirtualBox).

If you do not have the LAN option in 98, it means it didn't detect or properly installed a network device.

It should be an available option when you get the Internet Connection Wizard. However, you don't have that as it seems. Perhaps something in Control Panel you need to set? It's been a while for me since I last used 98 that way.
