64bit versions of Windows not Listed

Post by jsinclair92 »

I have an assignment for a college course to install Windows Server 2012 on VirtualBox. I have installed the latest version of VirtualBox and downloaded the server. Upon setup, I get the following error message.

I figure it is because, for some reason, VirtualBox doesn't allow me to set up a 64 bit operating system (which is needed to run the 64bit windows server). What could be the cause of this? If I cannot get this issue solved, I will not be able to complete my assignments.

I installed the server on Windows 2008 (32bit, since 64bit isn't listed).

Here is the log from VirtualBox:

Code: Select all

00:00:08.611191 HM: HMR3Init: Falling back to raw-mode: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes
You need to enable hardware acceleration in your bios.

1) 64-bit guests need hardware-virtualzation enabled in the hosts bios.
2) when creating the 64-bit guest you must select 64-bit in General -> Basic -> version.
3) If running Windows as host you must make sure hyper-v or xp mode is not enabled on the host. MS does not play well and wants it all.

Thank you for the quick reply! That worked perfectly!

one last question.. I am in the installation of windows server 2012, and it is asking me for a product key. It did not ask for a product key in either of the tutorials I have watched. I have went through my settings and cannot figure out what I have done wrong.

This is unfortunately not a VirtualBox issue, but a Microsoft issue. May be you can have a time-limited trial? Try to look for that kind of setup.
