  1. What did you do to install them? Exactly! With lots of details!
  2. "Restart the computer and nothing happens". What were you expecting to happen?
  3. "It does install, It just doesn't work". What doesn't work?
Please read the appropriate Chapter 4.2.1. Guest Additions for Windows. If you still have problems, please report back and I'll most probably tell you how to send us a log.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Please read the appropriate Chapter 4.2.1. Guest Additions for Windows. If you still have problems, please report back and I'll most probably tell you how to send us a log.
I am attempting to follow these instructions in Chapter 4.2.1 and get stuck here:

VeriSign Code Signing CA
Open the Windows Explorer.

Right click on VBoxWindowsAdditions-<Architecture>.exe, click on "Properties"

Go to tab "Digital Signatures", choose "Oracle Corporation" and click on "Details"

In tab "General" click on "View Certificate"

In tab "Certification Path" select "VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary CA"

Click on "View Certificate"

In tab "Details" click on "Copy to File ..."

In the upcoming wizard choose "DER encoded binary X.509 (.CER)" and save the certificate file to a local path, finish the wizard
The wizard does not supply a name for this file. I browse to a local path, and save it under the name I arbitrarily make up "Veri.cer". (.cer is provided)
Close certificate dialog for "Verisign Class 3 Code Signing 2010 CA"

Oracle Corporation
Open the Windows Explorer.

Right click on VBoxWindowsAdditions-<Architecture>.exe, click on "Properties"

Go to tab "Digital Signatures", choose "Oracle Corporation" and click on "Details"

In tab "General" click on "View Certificate"

In tab "Details" click on "Copy to File ..."

In the upcoming wizard choose "DER encoded binary X.509 (.CER)" and save the certificate file to a local path, finish the wizard
Same thing: The wizard does not supply a name for this file. I browse to a local path, and save it with the name I arbitrarily make up "ora.cer" (.cer is provided)
Close certificate dialog for "Oracle Corporation"

After exporting the two certificates above they can be imported into the certificate store using the certutil.exe utility:

certutil -addstore -f Root "<Path to exported certificate file>"

This is where I'm stuck: I don't know how to the last instruction:
using the certutil.exe utility:

certutil -addstore -f Root "<Path to exported certificate file>"
Can someone please guide me on that, step by step?

@ggdogg
These instructions are for the unattended setup. Is this what you're doing? Why?

@socratis, I understand now that it was unnecessary. I was trying to be thorough because I can't find the reason GA does not operate in spite of successfully completing setup and reboot. I have no icon in taskbar tray, and the functions such as seamless are grayed out. Do you have any suggestions?

Yes. Start at the beginning instead of the middle of the chapter. State the EXACT point that the step-by-step instructions fail. This is different from "I don't understand what they mean". If you don't, read it again. And again. Usually that solves 90% of the problems due to misunderstanding of the terminology.

Ok, new info: I do all of section 4.2.1.1. Installation and installation is complete. I go task manager and see VBoxService.exe in Guest's Windows Task manager Processes Tab. I go to Add/Remove Programs and see Guest Additions 5.1.2 in the list of applications. Both those tell me that the setup happened. The Guest Additions icon does NOT appear in the taskbar (ps: someone instructed me to start VboxTray.exe which isn't in Task Manager Processes Tab and I did that, and he instructed me to have it autoload at boot up. When I opened task manager just now it wasn't present).

I am able to set up shared folder but other things don't operate:
Shared drag and drop and shared clipboard doesn't work under any settings.
In the view menu, Seamless mopde, Auto-resize, and everything listed in Virtual Screen 1 are grayed out.

The screen resolution (rightclick on desktop>properties>Settings Tab) is 800x600, there are no other option and the slider won't go to the right. The host resolution is 1366x768. Full screen and Scaled mode work, but the screen size is really not practically useful without proper resolutions.

Btw the menu bar is off and I can't figure out how to turn it back on.

Any Suggestions on how to get these things working?

Hello folks!
As a first statement I can say I´m a noob at this, so I don´t really know where to start.

But my problems is identical to ggdogg´s problems with non working drag´n´drop, clipboard, seamless mode and auto-rerize guest display!

In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start. Log in. Wait for a minute.
  2. Shut down the VM. Not suspended, not paused. Complete shut down.
  3. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
  4. Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
On top of that, I'd like to see the "recipe" of the VM, the ".vbox" file:
  1. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show in Finder/Explorer/Whatever".
  2. ZIP the selected ".vbox" file and attach it in your response.

Ok, first I want to thank you for a very detailed answer! I think thats necessary for me to understand. lol :D

The log file was no problem:
XP mode-2016-10-06-18-39-41.zip
the log file
(24.18 KiB) Downloaded 21 times
But when I got to the "show in explorer thing" none of the files was selected. But the folder contained only two files, and only one file with the .vbox extension. So I figured that´s the one you want? And here it is:
XP mode.zip
.vbox file
(1.99 KiB) Downloaded 18 times
The second file in the folder ended with .vbox-prev just let me know if that´s the one you wanted. :)
