Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
Hey all,
Recently setup a Windows 10 guest and anytime my host display sleeps, the W10 guest goes completely black and I'm unable to interact with it. Only way to regain control is forcefully close the guest and re-launch. I can't even X out of the VM without it hanging indefinitely ... have to go into task manager and forcefully close.
Thoughts?

Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.
Specifically for the VM log file ("VBox.log.zip"), here's what you do:
Specifically for the VM log file ("VBox.log.zip"), here's what you do:
- Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
- Take the steps required to generate/observe the error.
- Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself). Not suspended, not paused. Shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
- Select "Show Log..."
- Save it (just the first log, VBox.log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
- You have installed VirtualBox in drive D:\ and your VM in drive C:\. Any particular reason?
- Where are the drives C:, D:\, E:\ and F:\? Is any of them external? USB, eSata, Firewire of NAS?
- Did you forget to mention that you have two screens (3440x1400 and 1920x1040)? Or you thought that it wasn't important?
- Finally, what are the power/energy saving settings on your guest? And your screensaver? Disable all of them (in your guest)

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
1) I thought I defaulted my new VM's to my D ... great, thanks for pointing out, will move.socratis wrote:

2) These are all internal SSD's on my desktop
3) I didn't realize that was important
4) It's on high power; however, just recently disabled turning off screen after 15 mins - haven't yet seen if the issue has come back
Another issue, when hitting the Windows key/button, the entire taskbar goes transparent and shows my host background - any ideas on that one?
Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
See attached for what happens when I hit the windows key on my guest.

See: Moving a VM before moving it.adambean wrote:I thought I defaulted my new VM's to my D ... great, thanks for pointing out, will move.
The importance of the display settings. These seem to be full screen resolutions. Is that true? If yes, then does the problem happen when not in full screen? That's why I think it might be important.
High-power on the guest? As I said, take it to no sleep, no screen-saver. Your host, yes, you can have energy savings enabled. Your guest, no.
For the other issue, open another thread with an appropriate title. Let's solve the freezing after the host sleeps issue here.

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
I observed a similar behavior. I'm not sure if it is the same thing or not. VirtualBox: 5.1.2, host: OSX 10.9.5, guest: Win7. Host sleeps (laptop, lid closed) and when the host awakens, the guest is "Aborted". I'll try to see what's going on.

They are both in seamless mode.socratis wrote:See: Moving a VM before moving it.adambean wrote:I thought I defaulted my new VM's to my D ... great, thanks for pointing out, will move.

Yep, high power on guest.
So far, I haven't had the issue after removing the shut off display timeout on the guest ... that may have been all that it was.
Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
I take that back, I'm having a multitude of random instability issues.
- Sometimes only one monitor goes into seamless
- Someones only one monitor has a display
- Changing display settings causes a lock up
- Disappearing task bar
Feels like there's something bigger wrong here ... any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
Change from Seamless to either Full screen, or Normal windowed. You'll need to see if the problems are only in Seamless mode, or if it happens on all different modes.

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
So far, only seamless.
Just now got a BSOD for a failure on VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (VBoxVideoW8.sys).
All kinds of random oddness with W10 so far, yet my W7 is rock solid.

Re: Windows 10 not working after host display sleep
Windows 10 unfortunately is a moving target. Microsoft changed the way that they release the updates, so instead of having Windows 10 with Service Pack #?, now you have Windows 10 build #####. The developers have to run and fix things. By the time the fixes are in, users have already updated Win10 to build #####+###. New problems, new fixes. Daily...
