Brother provide a pro-suite installation program to install my printer.

The printer prints under Ubuntu 14.04.

When I run the installation program from within WinXP the basic parts are installed until it comes to the "Plug in the usb cable" this should prompt the next stage of the printer/ scanner installation, but nothing happens and installation does not proceed.

I would appreciate some help on finding why VB does not appear to be finding the printer.

At what point did it break? Because last December it seemed to work, no?

1. When you upgraded your Ubuntu?
2. When you upgraded VirtualBox?
3. When you increased the number of CPUs from 3 to 4? BTW, not a good idea, you have exactly 4 on your host, don't give them all to your guest.
4. When you decreased your guest's memory from 5 to 3 GB? BTW, smart move, XP cannot use 5GB.

For about 15 min (and until you shut the VM down) you have the following messages only, repeating about 130 times(!):

00:12:38.585585 EHCI: USB Suspended

Were you plugging and unplugging the cable?

Below is my typical advice for troubleshooting USB problems. Ive deleted some of the steps you've already done.

Follow the steps below. If there is a failure, please state which step failed:

1. Create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. Check also http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids to make sure that you have the numbers correct.
2. Unplug the device.
3. Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
4. Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.
5. If the device shows up in your host and is not captured by the filter, either the filter is incorrect, or there might be a problem with your filter's software installation.
6. Shut down the VM and now zip and post the log.
7. Are you by any chance using a USB 3.0 port?
8. If on a Linux host, are you a member of the 'vboxusers' group? If not, add yourself with "sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers <your username>", then reboot.
9. If on a Linux host, run "sudo update-usbids".
10. Post the output of the following commands:

    VBoxManage list usbhost
    VBoxManage showvminfo "Your_Virtual_Machine_Name"
