[Solved] WinXP low resolution

Post by Piknik »

Hello!

I have Windows XP Pro on VB for Linux (Debian 7). VB 5.0.10

One time I to install WinXP on Virtual Machine and install VB Guest Addition.

All working perfect, but one day all broken-down:
If before the resolution adapts to the size of the window, now WinXP may have resolution 800x600 only.

I tried reinstall Guest Addition - not luck.

Enable/disable 3/2D-acelerator... Trying send on guest machine resolution 1920x1080 for display - this not work.

In WinXP I do not change settings and not install/remove programs.

Tell me, what else is worth seeing, to solve this problem?

Post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Please attach images locally. Many of us will not click on offsite links.

You say that only 800x600 is allowed, but your screenshot shows 800x600 selected at the left end of the scale, and the scale does not seem to be disabled? Perhaps merely the theme plus the low resolution is making this hard to read - my eyes aren't what they were.

The log shows the GAs to have actually been installed, good.

The log also shows several display sizes being tried, but all are in the low range: 640x480, 800x600, 720x400 etc. This is looking like a problem with the guest OS, not with VirtualBox.

In the manager GUI, File|Preferences|Display, try setting the "Maximum Guest Screen Size" field to "None", then shut down and restart the guest. You can also try reinstalling the GAs (speaking of which, you still have the GAs ISO mounted in the virtual drive, which is not good practice: the guest gets confused when this ISO is replaced the next time you update VirtualBox).

Yes, this is work!

I change parameter "Maximum Guest Screen Size" in File -> Preferences -> Display on "Auto" and autoresolution my WinXP recovered!

How I changed this parameter - I no idea.

Thanks you all for help! You are best!
