Setup question about readying CD's or DVDs

Hello

Linux version SuSE Linux Desktop 10 SP2

I have downloaded and installed the VM software. I have created the virtual space and named it. I have followed the instructions to configure VM to read the CD/DVD drive on my PC.

Once all this is done where do I go to install the software on the CD-Rom. How do I get the software to see the CD-Rom

From the manual


If you have actual CD or DVD media from which you want to install your guest
operating system (e.g. in the case of a Windows installation CD or DVD), put the
media into your host’s CD or DVD drive.

Then, in the settings dialog, go to the “CD/DVD-ROM” section and select “Host
drive” with the correct drive letter (or, in the case of a Linux host, device file).

This will allow your VM to access the media in your host drive, and you can
proceed to install from there.

Okay, I have followed the instructions to this point. How in VM do I then access the drive so that I can install the software?

Ehm, boot from it is a good idea... I don't actually see what your problem is. You use the cd/dvd as if you work with a normal pc. VirtualBox presents you with a custom build PC with no Operating System installed on it, and you have to install it yourself if you want to use the computer. So if you want to install Windows on it, put the Windows install cd in the drive, mount the physical drive in your VM and boot from the cd. By default, it will boot from floppy first, then cdrom and last hard disk. Once Windows is installed, swap the cd with the other software you want to install, use the windows explorer to open the cdrom if autorun does not kick in and install the software.

I have seen on the forum here that somehow, original discs aren't read properly, as for a copy of that same original disc is read properly. Keep that in mind. If you use an ISO file, these issues will not exist.
