Windows can no longer paste files

Post by rayster »

Windows 7 guest on Unbuntu 12 host. This setup has been working fine for quite a while. Suddenly, with no config changes I'm aware of, I can't paste files within windows. I seem to be able to create/paste single files, but whenever I try and paste multiple files I get an error "Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect"

Searched the Internet and tried Microsoft's solution - can't post the link and it didn't work anyway. Searched here and saw people were seeing the error and uninstalling/reinstalling the guest extensions resolved it. Tried that with 4.1.44, then reverted to 4.1.12. Still nope. Extremely frustrated at this point. Anything else that I can try or troubleshoot?

I did a quick search (Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect) and it seems that this is a Windows problem, not a VirtualBox one. You are operating completely within the guest, you receive a guest error. The fact that this is a VM, I think it has nothing to do with the generated error. I believe that you would have better luck if you focused on the Windows-aspect of the problem. For example, take a look at these:
- http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-su ... paste.html
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Thanks, but as I said in my original post, I troubleshot the Windows OS side first. I couldn't/can't post the links but I've already tried the troubleshooting steps from both of the pages you provided, without success. I'm only looking at Virtualbox because other people seem to have had this issue and their resolution centered around the Guest Extensions.

Well, in your first post you also mentioned that you didn't change anything in the configuration. I assumed you meant VirtualBox. And since your guest's copy/paste was working, I can't see of any reason that it decided to just stop working. But, if you think that the GAs might be the problem, you could easily test this out by simply uninstalling the GAs and see if that changes anything. You can easily re-install them later (or not).

Do you happen to have a link to these testimonies?

Please take care and use correct terminology. Guest Extensions is misleading, because it confuses Guest Additions and the Extension Pack, which are very different things.

Performed the test as described and with the Guest Additions removed cut and paste work fine. Of course i can't test with a drive mapped from the host, which is what I need.

A few. But I still can't post links, and can't modify a link enough to get around the forum software.

My apologies.

Let's remove some unknowns from the equation shall we?

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Also can you explain in detail how you are copying the files, from where, to where, and is it via shared folders, DnD, or simply C&P multiple files from within the guest only?

So background - I primarily use the VM for photo editting, since the Adobe tools I'm most familair with don't run in Ubuntu. The image catalog is stored on local C:, the actual image files are stored on a local file server that I map a drive to, and I mount the SD card reader in the host as a transient shared folder and access via the UNC path. The Adobe Lightroom application has an import feature that copies from a source location and pastes into systemically created destination folders. It usually involves 6-40MB files, several GB total filesize. This has always worked fine, and makes the process relatively fire and forget. I first became aware of an issue with that process started to fail. Lightroom would attempt the import, and then come back and tell me the files couldn't be created in the destination. To troubleshoot/work around this I attempted manual cut and pasting from the SD card shared folder to the network share and to local C:, which is when I get the Windows error. I checked the permissions on the destination folders and &&&'d my server shares. I've thought it was resolved a couple of times because I've been able to paste a file or two, but whenever I do a mass copy (more than a handful of files) it has failed. The test performed above was with 22 files, 430MB, so more than I've successfully been able to move since the issue started. Single file creation/modifying does not seem to be an issue, i.e. temp/log files get created and updated w/o any problem as far as I can tell.

I'm a big believer in "something had to change" but for the life of me I can't think of what it is. I've deliberately tried to seal this system in amber, precisely to avoid random changes.

  • VirtualBox 4.1.44_Ubuntu r104071 linux.amd64 (Nov 23 2015 18:06:25) release log
    00:00:01.650 Package type: LINUX_64BITS_GENERIC (OSE)
00:00:01.715 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 4.3.10 r93012; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP unusable because of 'VBoxExtPackRegister returned VERR_VERSION_MISMATCH, pReg=0000000000000000 ErrInfo='Helper version mismatch - expected 0x10001 got 0x10000'')
00:00:01.717 VRDE: VirtualBox Remote Desktop Extension is not available.
To start with you are using the Ubuntu fork which we do not support. If you want to proceed with their version you will need to contact them. Then your Extension Pack version does not match you running version of VirtualBox and you might as well not have it installed. Normally this will prevent the guest from even booting but you probably have the USB 2 & 3 disabled.
  • 00:00:11.695 Guest Additions information report: Version 4.1.12 r77245 '4.1.12'
Lastly your guest additions are out of date ( and out of sync ) and can have some effect on your issue.

Not sure what this means. Are you saying the version of Ubuntu I'm on is unsupported or the Virtualbox version? If the latter, what would be the supported Virtualbox version for this OS?
Edit: Nevermind, I see that there was a Ubuntu specific branch and the Oracle core. Presumably I installed the fork years ago. I'm going to try to install v5 and see what I get.

The only reason I have this version installed is troubleshooting. As I stated in my original post I started this out running 4.1.44. I looked for a later version of the Guest Additions but didn't see one.

Unless you install the version from virtualbox.org and not the Ubuntu repo, we don't support it. They change the original source code and make it impossible to know what to tell you. Not to mention that the entire 4.1 branch has reached EOL

Yeah, I see that now. I have version 5 running, trying to get re-combobulated to test.
