Cannot upgrade from 5.0.24 to 5.1.0

Host Ubuntu 14.04 64bit with VBox 5.0.24 installed.
Opening virtualbox-5.1_5.1.0-108711~Ubuntu-trusty_amd64.deb with Ubuntu Software Center yields error message:
"Breaks existing package 'virtualbox-5.0' that conflict: 'virtualbox'. But the '/home/[...]/virtualbox-5.1_5.1.0-108711~Ubuntu-trusty_amd64.deb' provides it via: 'virtualbox'."

I have been using VBox back since some version 3 and there have never been problems or any such errors with any VBox upgrade installed through Software Center.

Anybody have a clue what the problem is here?

Use dpkg instead. Ubuntu package manager does this often.

Basically the same error is presented when using dpkg.
Is it advisable to use --force-conflicts ?

I would remove the original then before installing and still use dpkg. Since you already had 5.-.* I don't think any new packages need to be installed but you can use the -f flag to bring in any missing package/s

It is necessary to remove the old version and install a new one.

In addition to VBoxVM's suggestion, I had to clean up the old Virtual Box library which was left after removing in software center.

Google "cleaning up your ubuntu installation" (stchman...cleanup is the link) Can't post a link as a new member!!
