Restrict access to host webcam and microphone

Post by Darth Medved »

Hello community :)

Q: How can i disable access to host camera and microphone for some (not all) guest VM's ?
Typical configuration : Host = Win10 x64, Guest = Ubuntu 16.04 x64, USB/embedded Webcam, embedded mic.

P.S. Yes, I know how to disable mic & webcam in Ubuntu, but I want to guarantee that no one will have access (via custom driver(s) for example).

Thanks!

For the microphone, you'd have to set the audio to "Null". You'll loose your output as well. For the camera, if you don't explicitly enable it, it's not used. Unless you mean that you want to disable access to the settings for these settings, in which case I don't think you can do it.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

On VirtualBox 6.1, using a Windows 10 Host and Debian Guest.

I could only get the light on my WebCam to turn off by starting the Virtual Machine, then from the top menu selecting Machine->Settings. There are options under Audio as well as a dropdown menu under User Interface/Devices. Under the User Interface/Devices dropdown menu I unchecked Audio and Webcams, this appeared to do nothing.

I turned Audio Input off under Audio and this turned off my Webcam. However, I believe there is a bug in VirtualBox, although it remembers the settings, I still have to change something (like toggling Audio output) and click OK for the settings to take effect every time I start the VM. These settings can be accessed before starting the VM, by the Settings option in the VirtualBox Manager, but that appears to do nothing.
