RAM memory allocated to windows 7 guest machine.

Post by pavloski »

I'm running windows 7 on virtualbox installed in a laptop with xubuntu and 12GB of RAM, my question is: I have allocated in the settings of virtualbox 6GB of RAM to windows 7 guest machine BUT when I run windows 7 then check computer properties it shows me the installed RAM memory is 1.87GB, why windows 7 doesn't have 6GB which was allocated to that? Am I missing some thing or configuration?? thanks Vladimir.
OBS.: My laptop is running xubuntu 64bits and windows 7 64bits guest machine.

First of all it doesn't matter how much memory you have on your host, it matters how much available memory you have. You're right that it should say 6GB. In any event, do the following:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
  2. Take the steps required to generate/observe the error.
  3. Shut down the VM. Not suspended, not paused. Shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
  4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
  5. Select "Show Log..."
  6. Save it (just the first log, VBox.log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I took a look at it but couldn't find anything obvious. So you'll have to wait until someone with a better set of eyes comes around and sees something that I may have missed.

Obvious question, is your GUEST a 64 bit OS? If not, then it is limited to 4GB of RAM and will show somewhere in the neighborhood of above 3GB. The 1.87 is an oddity.

I'd like to see the "recipe" of the VM, the ".vbox" file:
  1. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
  2. Select "Show in Finder/Explorer/Whatever".
  3. ZIP the selected ".vbox" file and attach it in your response.

Nothing out of the ordinary, sorry. What happens if you set your RAM to 2, 3, 4, 5 GB? Do you still get 1.87? What about if you set it to 1.5?

I'd like to see a screenshot of the guest properties mentioned in the first post.

I have set this time 4GB to windows 7 guest and unfortunately I still get 1.87 GB of installed RAM in windows 7 guest machine, I think is some BUG in virtualbox or some thing else.

There are a ton of people using Window 7 guests. Somebody would have noticed. Please follow mpack's advice and post a screenshot of the Windows 7 guest where it shows 1.87 GB of RAM.

Well, I have no idea why Windows is displaying the wrong amount of RAM, but I see no evidence of a VirtualBox problem, so I suggest that you need to ask Microsoft about this. Perhaps it has something to do with being an evaluation version of Win7.

p.s. Side note, but you only have a dual core host, so you shouldn't be allocating both to a VM.

Thanks, but for the time being nobody knows what is going on, I will be waiting for somebody who has any other idea.
