Drag & drop files don't work between my Windows XP Pro SP3 guest VM & Debian stable/Jessie host.

Post by ant »

Hello.

My VirtualBox v5.0.24's drag and drop files don't work between my Windows XP Pro SP3 guest VM and Debian stable/Jessie host (KDE v4.14.2). They both have all the updates including the guest additions. When I drag a small file from host to guest, I do see VM's green + icon but I see nothing. Dragging a tiny 1 byte text file from guest to host doesn't let me drag out of the VM since it stays in the VM. What's wrong? :(

Thank you in advance. :)

Is this a new behavior? If so, then you should be posting this to the Discuss the 5.0.24 release thread. If not, then take a look at Investigating drag and drop (DnD) problems.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

No, it is not new. I had it for many versions. It used to work a while ago. Wow, lots of work to debug. I'll see if I can do that. Argh to hosts' reboots though. :(

Since I already rebooted my Debian stable/Jessie earlier due to its Kernel (3.16.7-ckt25-2+deb8u3 (2016-07-02)) upgrades a couple hours ago before reading this forum thread's debug post (did not change or set anything from its link yet), I tried my VM again to see if it works after the host's reboot. I was able drag and drop a tiny text file from host to the VM guest.

However, I could not go in reverse due to this KDE4's Plasma Desktop Shell's pop-up message (huh?): http://i.imgur.com/bQgFfJ0.gif (screen shot/capture). What do I do? Do I still need to get debug logs for this weirdness?

Thank you in advance. :)

Just FYI, you could/should be attaching files here, not on a 3rd party site.
Now, what happens if you fill in the information and OK the dialog? Does it proceed? I'm tending to think that this is not a VirtualBox problem but an idiosyncrasy of your KDE-based host. I would even call it a good sign because the host is being notified that a suitable drop area is willing to accept the "dropping" and is acting upon it.

OK. I found something interesting. I can drag and drop between fine if I don't do it with KDE's desktop. I have to do it in Dolphin (KDE's file manager). Is that by design? I'd assume I can drag and drop on my KDE's desktop like I do in Windows and Mac OS X.
