8.1 guest locks up shortly after boot

Post by baggednismo »

I have been running VBox for a long time now and just the other day i started getting weird problems with the guest. After an indeterminate amount of time the guest slows to a crawl seemingly unresponsive. I can make it to the task manager after some effort and find that cpu, disk and mem are normal. the host cpu disk and mem are also normal. its not related to any specific application, it could be an application in the MS office suite or a CRM/RMM thick client.

Host:
i7 6700K
GTX 970
16gb DDR3
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Guest:
2 cores
6gb ram
Win 8.1

Post the guests log file after the slow down and shut down ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

I would also suggest that you check and see if the Windows update is happening while this slowdown is happening.

Note: depending on what the log shows this topic may be moved to Windows guest.

I deleted all the VBox.log files so that i got you a nice fresh copy of the problem. Also I am pretty positive i know what causes it now. it has to do with the mouse having a handle on a guest element and moving to the host machine. to reproduct this (which i have done 4 times now just testing) if i open a browser or an application that has a scroll bar and i click/drag that scroll bar down if at any point my mouse moves out of the guest window to the host the guest practically locks up.

attached is the log

VirtualBox VM 5.0.18_Ubuntu r106667 linux.amd64 (Apr 20 2016 09:39:44) release log
00:00:00.235774 Package type: LINUX_64BITS_GENERIC (OSE)
00:00:00.236269 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.20 r106931; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
00:00:00.236272 VNC (Version: 5.0.18 r106667; VRDE Module: VBoxVNC)

So many things wrong here.
  • 1) you are using the Ubntu fork that we do not support, they do.
    2) You have an older version that needs to be updated
    3) you have mismatched ExtPack ( it must match the running version of VirtualBox).
I suggest you remove this version and install the official version from virtualbox.org with matching ExtPack. If you decide to stay with the Ubuntu build then you need to ask them for help.

I've seen exactly the same problem in terms of Symptoms after an upgrade done to my Opensuse host.

Host:
NAME="openSUSE Leap"
VERSION="42.1"
VERSION_ID="42.1"
PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE Leap 42.1 (x86_64)"
ID=opensuse
ANSI_COLOR="0;32"
CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:opensuse:opensuse:42.1"
ID_LIKE="suse"

Virtual Box : This Version works fine and is the revision downgraded to.
virtualbox - VirtualBox is an Emulator - 5.0.18-16.1
virtualbox-host-kmp-default - Host kernel module for VirtualBox - 5.0.18_k4.1.21_14-16.1
Distribution - openSUSE Leap 42.1

Virtual Box : This version introduces the problem identified in this post.
virtualbox - VirtualBox is an Emulator - 5.0.22-19.1
virtualbox-host-kmp-default - Host kernel module for VirtualBox - 5.0.22_k4.1.26_21-19.1
Distribution - openSUSE Leap 42.1

Hosts: Windows 10

The extension packs were matched on each install. As I'm pulling my install from the OpenSUSE repository, I've not yet tried version 5.0.24, so I don't know if this has fixed the problem. However, as I'm under the gun and need my virtuals working a downgrade to the previous version has solved the problem.

@eacbelcher,

If you are installing the OpenSUSE fork then you need to address your issue with them. I have read on the DEV channels that leap does have problem with the newer builds and there is not much we can do about it.

I was originally running the official virtualbox some time ago and i had ran into problems with it regarding tizen vm's on ubuntu. the only way i got it to work was after hours of tinkering and running the ubuntu fork instead of the official. Since thre were still issues (more so relating to their IDE and vm manager) i spun up a windows host to simply develop for tizen os and left it at that. I will work on moving it back over to the official release and getting the correct extension pack installed.

Thanks for your help
