Error installing Guest Additions 5.0.22

I'm using a Windows Virtual Machine. I installed the VM with Windows 7 and updated a few weeks ago to Windows 10.
At that time I used VirtualBox + Guest Additions 5.0.20. But after upgrading to Windows 10 I'm not able to install version 5.0.22 of the Guest Additions. Sadly one of my attempts was to deinstall the current Guest Additions 5.0.20. But now I'm stuck without any Guest Additions, which is bad because I need the features.

The guest OS registry was most likely zapped - obviously an OS change crossing 3 major versions has implications for the registry structure.

This isn't really a VirtualBox problem by the way, it's a Windows Installer problem. You have a bit of software you'd like to uninstall, and Windows won't let you. The origin of the software is rather irrelevant.

Anyway, in this situation I only know two solutions, only the second of which is guaranteed (metaphorically): (1) is to go through the entire registry searching for "VirtualBox" or "VBox", and delete all mentions. Definitely not guaranteed to work, so I'd make a backup first of course. (2) is to reinstall the guest OS from scratch, keeping your product key, then migrate your apps (*). I recently did this on my host after 12 years of XP, and it really wasn't a huge struggle. I kept my old system as a VM, just for reference and in case I forgot something.

(*) The only app whose settings I didn't want to lose during the migration was my Firefox (actually the Pale Moon fork) profile, but happily Firefox doesn't rely on the registry to store my profile, so all I had to do was copy one folder.
