Windows 10 guest so slooooow - optimum settings for speed boost?

Post by mingle »

Hi guys,

I'm running VB 5.0.22 under Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (release 1511) and use several different guests (Linux Mint 17.3 64-bit, Windows XP SP3) all of which operate at a reasonable usable speed.

However, when I install Windows 10 it runs so slowly that it's barely usable.

My host machine isn't cutting-edge, but has decent specs: Core 2 Quad 2.66MHz, 8GB RAM, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what settings I should use for my Windows 10 guest, to try and boost performance a bit?

Any comments/help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike.

Main things: enable VT-x, and never give a guest more than 2 cores nor too much of the host's RAM. Good performance requires both guest and host to have plenty to play with.

And bear in mind that all new Windows installs run like treacle until they finish their first indexing and Windows Update tasks.

That said, Win10 would not have been my first choice as a guest OS in a VM. Is there some reason it needed to be Win10?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply...

I currently have all 4 cores assigned to the guest and half system RAM - I'll give that a tweak.

The reason I have Win 10, is that I'm planning on moving to LM17.3 as my main desktop OS, but I want to keep a current installation of Windows, as there are a few programs I need to keep.

Cheers,

Mike.
