enabling sound on Windows 98

How do I enable the sound in windows 98?
I've made sure to have my virtual manager off and I went to settings clicked on audio clicked the box that enables audio went to host audio driver selected windows direct sound and then changed the auto controller to ac97
the sound on windows 98 still doesn't work
