Shared Folders on windows nt 4.0

Post by capcla »

Hi,
I have installed windows nt 4.0 sp 6 on virtualbox but I can not set up shared folders.
I'm trying to share the folder

Code: Select all

c:\VMShare
When I use the command

Code: Select all

net use x: \\vboxsvr\VMShare
in the prompt of win nt, the system give me this response

Code: Select all

System error 53 has occurred
What I do?
Is there a manner to share documents between host and client without the shared folders?
Thanks a lot

From the User Manual, Chapter 4.3:
Shared Folders are supported with Windows (2000 or newer), Linux and Solaris guests.
So, installing the guest additions on an NT4 guest will do nothing for your shared folders.

Absolutely. The good old network share (a.k.a. SMB share, or Windows share). As you would do with any two physical computers that are on the same network.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Yes, but, how socratis says, guestadditions doesn't work well on win nt

Did you read the reply from socratris? His reply is quite clear to me. Have you never heard of Windows file sharing or SMB shares?

The solution with windows' shared folders works only if the host is connect to a network. I don't know if the pc will be connected to a network.
I don't know SMB shares. I will study them. But if this solution uses a network, it could not go well.
Thanks

The solution with network shares will work over a virtual network, e.g. bridged or host only.

SMB shares are network shares using a Windows OS protocol. Windows is popular so many other OS's support the same protocol as an option, e.g. Linux (via SAMBA) and OSX.

I already have setted up the network of virtualbox on card with bridge but if the host has not the connection, the shared folder will not be shared.

I have created a shared folder on the host and I can see it on the guest if the network of virtualbox is set on card with bridge and if the host is connected.

I have done three screenshot to illustrate the situation:

Card honly host with host connected

Card with bridge with host connected

I see. If you are bridge to a host network adapter then you shouldn't normally require an external connection in order for the host to see the VM (and vice versa), however bridging to a wireless adapter can have strange results. VirtualBox allows it, but the results are not guaranteed.
