I have just installed Ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron. I have installed VirtualBox and it went fine, I could add new virtual machine, everything seemed OK.
But when I want to start it, XP will not boot.
How to work round this issue? Could it be something with writing rights of NTFS partition?
In fact even before installing VirtualBox, Ubuntu did not always mounted XP even to read...

Can you confirm your configuration?
You have XP and Ubuntu 8.04 installed dual boot?
What partitions do you have?
What works and doesn't work before you installed VBox?
What works and doesn't work after you installed VBox?
What are you trying to use VBox for?

Tha motherboard or proc has just died while working in XP some 2 hours ago, so I cannot access data any longer, just remember some. Fortunately there is also a laptop here.

Yes. I want a linux host and XP guest.

On the prmary master: XP (NTFS), ext3 (Ubuntu), swap
On primary slave: FAT32 for data to be used under both OS (about 3 of them)

Everything was OK, I just could not write the NTFS partition, but I did not mind as all the data is on the FAT32 one.

Same as before.

To run XP in it for I shouldn't always reboot when I want to perform a taswk that I can only in XP and not in Ubuntu (PDF manipulation, converting to doc, extracting images, etc.)

I'm sorry that I can not be more exact but I have an urgent job (the one with the PDF) and do not have even time to look after replacemet of my hardware just broken having the hardy heron on it. The display went black, the Hard disk LED was on, and could not reboot any longer. It does not miss Video card, or RAM (no beep) when I remove them so I think it will be a dead mother board or processor.

I hope my version of this problem is easier to answer.

Please, use search and read the manual. They all say that with the version from the website you can create RAW disk images (vmdk) and boot that in a VM. It might not work right off the bat because the MBR might be missing. Just search and you will find all the anwers.
