can't get full size guest virtual screen

Post by bilsch »

Log file is attached. Host=ubuntu14.04.4 32-bit Guest=ubuntu14.04.4. 32 bit. The host physical machine is Dell Inspiron N4110 (64 bit). THE PROBLEM is the virtual screen shows only the upper left quadrant of the guest GUI. Choosing 'view/fullscreen' fills the rest of the host screen area with white but still only displays the upper left quadrant of the guest GUI in the middle of the white host screen. The 'view' menu has option 'auto-resize guest display' in GRAY and it has a check mark to the left of the option; i.e. the option is pre-selected and cannot be changed. The 'view' menu also has option 'virtual screen 1' which expands to show 12 choices for screen resolution from 640x480 to 1920x1200. These choices are all in GRAY and 640x480 is pre-selected and cannot be changed. I read in User Manual about entering a custom resolution using Linux command line. I tinkered with that but was not able to get anything but the upper left quadrant of guest GUI to display. I rebooted the host but no change took effect. I have this problem with each bootable ISO I have tried - not only ubuntu 14.04.4.

I think it must be possible to display the entire guest GUI screen. It is really necessary because there are controls on the right hand side of the guest GUI, which cannot be accessed in this limited display. I think there must be a simple solution to this problem, but I have not been able to figure it out.

You have the Ubuntu Guest Additions, which are old as well. Read Ch. 4.2.2. Guest Additions for Linux in the user manual.

Please note that you should fully shut down your client before posting the log, otherwise it's incomplete. At lease this time you did post a (partial) log... ;)

Yes, guest additions fixed the problem. Thanks. Bill S.
