password issue with XP in Ubuntu 8.04

I have virtualbox running in Ubuntu 8.04. I successfully installed Windows XP Home, but when it boots up to the log in screen, it thinks I have a password, even though I never created one. It tells me that the domain is not available and I need to enter my correct password. It says the same thing if I try to log on as Administrator (which has no password on installation by default). Is this an issue with this version? I'm not at home on my computer at present and I don't recall which version I have but it's the latest one from the virtualbox website, not the one installed through the repositories via synaptic package manager.

There's no way VirtualBox could cause your Windows installation to suddenly put a password on your account...

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it had. I just wondered if, because XP was running in a "virtualbox" it could be confused somehow.

I deleted the WinXP machine and deleted virtualbox. Then reinstalled virtualbox and XP and it all worked fine. The interesting thing is that when I reinstalled virtualbox (after having rebooted) it still new about my XP virtual machine...

The reason it knows about your VM, is because the uninstaller never removed the application data folder for VB (found in %appdata%\.virtualbox).
Is your password problem solved now?

Yes, the password issue is now solved. Thanks for the explanation regarding the retention of the virtual machine info. Next I need to figure out how to connect to a local network and to get my USB recognized, but I haven't had time to check into these two issues yet.
